99 Nights in the Forest Rune and Key Quest Guide

Obtaining the Rune

The Rune, as with other games, is the easier quest to complete. To obtain this badge, you need to trick or treat at one house during a campaign. I recommend playing multiplayer, as other players can help with sourcing candles for trick-or-treating.

To get candles, you need to kill cultists either at their base or during campfire raids or find them within chests. Then, at nighttime, head to one of the houses decorated with pumpkins and a lantern. Ignite the lantern, and you’re able to trick or treat.

Some things to note are that you may only trick or treat at night and once per house. When the candle extinguishes, you’re able to relight the same house, but they’re on cooldown until then.

Obtaining the Key

After collecting the first badge, you’re 1/5th of the way to getting the Key! Whilst in the same campaign, trick or treat again, this time visiting an additional 4 houses, making 5 total. You must complete all 5 houses during the same campaign to get the Key Badge. (This doesn’t mean you have to do the same campaign for the Rune and Key, but it does make things simpler if you do.)

If you leave the game, you’ll need to reignite 5 houses in a new campaign. This is why I recommend playing with other people, as they make it easier to find candles and unlock houses. You and other players can all visit the same houses at night and protect one another from wolves and the deer.
